Featuring useful tools like enhanced writing aids, email summaries, and notifications

Apple has announced that it will begin rolling out Apple Intelligence starting next month with the release of iOS 18.1, iPadOS 18.1, and macOS Sequoia 15.1. This personal intelligence system combines the power of generative models with personal context to deliver helpful and personalized intelligence. More features will be introduced in the coming months.

Apple also unveiled the new iPhone 16 series, designed around Apple Intelligence and featuring the A18 and A18 Pro chips, making them the most advanced and powerful iPhone models to date.

Initially, Apple Intelligence will be available in U.S. English, with plans to quickly expand to include local English versions for Australia, Canada, New Zealand, South Africa, and the United Kingdom in December. Support for additional languages like Chinese, French, Japanese, and Spanish will begin next year.

Integration and Features

Apple Intelligence is deeply integrated into iOS 18, iPadOS 18, and macOS Sequoia, leveraging the power of Apple silicon chips to understand and generate language and images, perform actions across apps, and utilize personal context to simplify and accelerate daily tasks—all without compromising user privacy and security. Many of the models powering Apple Intelligence run entirely on the device.

Private cloud computing also offers the ability to adapt and scale computational power between on-device processing and larger models running on dedicated Apple silicon servers.

The first set of Apple Intelligence features will be available by next month.

Enhanced Writing Tools and Image Capabilities

With new writing tools, users can refine their text by rephrasing, proofreading, and summarizing almost anywhere they write—including in Mail, Notes, Pages, and third-party apps.

In the Photos app, the Memories feature now allows users to create movies they want to watch by simply typing a description. They can use natural language to search for specific photos, and video search has become more powerful with the ability to find precise moments within videos. The new cleanup tool lets users identify and remove unwanted elements in a photo's background without accidentally altering the main subject.

Audio Recording and Summarization

In the Notes and Phone apps, users can record audio, generate summaries, and create text transcriptions. When starting a recording during a call in the Phone app, participants are automatically notified. Upon ending the call, Apple Intelligence generates a summary to help recall key points.

Siri Enhancements

Apple Intelligence helps users prioritize and stay focused through summary notifications across apps and a new focus mode called Reduce Interruptions, which displays only notifications that may require immediate attention. Additionally, Priority Mail Messages in Mail understand email content and highlight only urgent messages. Inbox summaries provide the most important information from each email rather than just showing the first few lines. Smart reply options in Mail offer quick response suggestions and recognize questions to ensure everything is answered.

Siri has become more interactive, featuring a new design with a light that wraps around the screen edge when activated on iPhone, iPad, or CarPlay.

On Mac devices, users can place Siri anywhere on the desktop for easy access while working. They can also type to Siri at any time on iPhone, iPad, and Mac, and switch between text and voice interactions to expedite daily tasks.

With enhanced language understanding, Siri can comprehend requests even if users stumble over words and can maintain context when switching topics. Additionally, thanks to Siri's extensive knowledge of Apple products, it can now answer thousands of questions about device features and settings, helping users learn everything from how to record the screen to easily sharing a Wi-Fi password.

Upcoming Features

More Apple Intelligence features will be released later this year and in the coming months. The Image Playground will allow users to create images in moments.

Emoji experiences are also being elevated, enabling users to create original Memojis by simply typing a description or choosing a photo of a friend or family member.

Privacy and Artificial Intelligence

Apple Intelligence is designed to protect user privacy at every step. One of its foundational pillars is on-device processing, relying on many models that run entirely on the device.

For more complex tasks requiring additional processing power, private cloud computing extends the privacy and security of Apple devices to the cloud, enhancing intelligence capabilities.

Private cloud computing represents a significant advancement in server-based intelligence. When using it, user data is not stored or shared with Apple; it's used solely to fulfill the user's requests. Independent experts can examine the code running on Apple silicon servers to continuously verify privacy promises.

Additionally, for users who choose to access ChatGPT through Siri or writing tools, privacy protection is integrated into their requests—their IP addresses are hidden, and OpenAI does not store their queries. Users can benefit from ChatGPT's capabilities for free without creating an account, and ChatGPT's data usage policies apply to those who choose to add their accounts.

Availability

Apple Intelligence will be available as a free software update. The first set of features will be available in a beta version next month as part of iOS 18.1, iPadOS 18.1, and macOS Sequoia 15.1, with more features rolling out in the coming months.

These features will be available on iPhone 16, iPhone 16 Plus, iPhone 16 Pro, iPhone 16 Pro Max, iPhone 15 Pro, iPhone 15 Pro Max, and iPad and Mac devices with an M1 chip or later, with Siri and the device language set to U.S. English.
