Apple plans to gradually introduce its new AI features over the course of this year and next, starting from October.

On Monday, Apple announced its new iPhone 16 series, which includes four phones of different sizes, all equipped with advanced AI capabilities powered by the new Apple Intelligence features.

However, Apple intends to release these AI features in stages over the coming months, with full availability extending into next year. For iPhone 16 users eager to experience these features, some patience will be required, as the release dates will vary based on region and language.

Here is the detailed schedule for the release of these new features as revealed by Apple:

First: What AI Features Will Arrive with iOS 18.1?

During the unveiling event for the new iPhone 16 models, Apple confirmed that the new AI features won’t be available immediately when the phones ship on September 20. Instead, they will be included in upcoming iOS 18 updates, released over the next few months.

The final version of iOS 18.1 will be rolled out in October and will include several new "Apple Intelligence" features, such as:

1. Creative Writing Tools:

These new tools will allow users to rephrase, summarize, and proofread texts across various apps, including Mail, Notes, Pages, and third-party apps.

The tools include:

  • Rewrite Tool: Helps rephrase content in different styles to match your audience or task, whether you're writing a formal cover letter or a playful party invite.
  • Proofread Tool: Corrects grammatical and spelling errors while suggesting improvements, with explanations for the suggested edits.
  • Summarize Tool: Allows users to select a text and condense it into readable paragraphs, bullet points, or tables.

2. Photo Editing Features:

Some AI-powered photo editing tools will also be introduced, such as the Clean Up Tool, which lets you remove distracting background elements without affecting the main subject, similar to Google’s “Magic Eraser.”

Additionally, the Video Search feature will allow users to find specific moments in videos and skip directly to the relevant part.

3. Audio Recording Summaries:

iOS 18.1 will include a feature that summarizes audio recordings, such as notes or phone calls, using advanced AI to generate concise, helpful text summaries.

4. New Features for the Mail App:

The Mail app will see major improvements thanks to AI. A new section called Priority Messages will display only the most important emails at the top. It will also provide a summary of each message instead of just previewing the first few lines.

You’ll be able to use a new Summarize button to condense emails. The Smart Reply feature will suggest quick responses and identify all questions in an email to ensure nothing is missed.

Significant improvements to Siri are also expected in iOS 18.1, making it more capable of understanding complex commands, handling interruptions, and maintaining context across multiple requests. Siri will also allow smoother transitions between voice and typed inputs depending on your needs.

It’s worth noting that all these features were previously tested in beta versions of iOS 18.1 with developers. Upon release, they will only be available in U.S. English and will still be labeled as “Beta” while Apple refines them based on user feedback.

Second: What Features Will Arrive Before the End of the Year?

The second wave of Apple Intelligence features is expected with the release of iOS 18.2, which is likely to be rolled out toward the end of the year. Key features will include:

1. Image Playground:

This tool will allow users to generate creative and original images in seconds from text prompts. You’ll be able to choose from three styles: Animation, Illustration, and Sketch.

Image Playground will also understand the context in which it’s being used, suggesting image ideas based on the content of the conversation or text. For example, it might propose images related to ongoing messages in a chat.

2. Genmoji:

iOS 18.2 will also introduce Genmoji, a tool that generates custom emojis from text or creates Genmoji characters based on images of friends and family. These Genmojis can be shared in text messages, used as stickers, or integrated into replies like traditional emojis.

3. ChatGPT Integration:

ChatGPT will also be coming to Apple devices by the end of the year, enabling users to get instant answers to questions or help with writing messages, articles, and more.

Third: What Features Are Expected in Early 2025?

Siri is set to undergo significant enhancements during the first half of 2025, including integration with a wide range of third-party apps. This will make it easier to access information and perform tasks more efficiently.

Siri will also gain On-Screen Awareness, allowing it to understand and analyze content on your screen. For example, if someone sends you an address via a messaging app, you could ask Siri to add it directly to that person’s contact details.

Additionally, Apple Intelligence will expand its language support in early 2025 to include Chinese, French, Japanese, and Spanish. Initially, Apple is focusing on English to ensure top-quality performance before expanding to other languages.

Limited Expansion Next Year:

Apple plans to expand language support and coverage to additional regions next year. However, the company faces significant regulatory challenges in areas like the European Union and China.

Apple announced that the new AI features would not be available for iPhones and iPads in the EU initially due to uncertainties surrounding new digital services regulations that impose restrictions on large tech companies.

However, these features will be available on Macs in the EU, as they do not face the same regulatory constraints.

In China, Apple also faces regulatory challenges but is working to overcome them. Consequently, the rollout of these features will initially be limited, with a focus on English-speaking regions that don’t impose heavy regulatory restrictions.
