Apple is reportedly developing a new smart display aimed at home use, according to a recent report by Bloomberg.

The report suggests that this new product is expected to launch as early as 2025. The smart display, which will be budget-friendly, is internally codenamed "J490." It will be designed for making FaceTime calls and controlling smart home devices.

This display will feature Apple’s AI technology and run on a new operating system called "homeOS," a version derived from the current tvOS, according to sources familiar with the development.

These updates reinforce earlier rumors about the development of homeOS, as references to the mysterious system were discovered in the source code of tvOS version 17.4 earlier this year.

Previous rumors also pointed to Apple working on a smart display or a HomePod with a screen.

Additionally, Apple is working on a more expensive smart display similar to an iPad, which will also run on homeOS and incorporate AI features. This device is expected to be connected to a robotic arm that can rotate 360 degrees and move up or down, making it easier to relocate within the home. The price of this robotic display is anticipated to exceed $1,000 at launch.

Apple aims to integrate AI into more of its platforms, but its current range of smart home devices—such as Apple TVs and speakers—lack the components necessary to run AI models locally.

The company continues its unique approach by developing dedicated operating systems for different device categories, whether it’s flagship products like iPhones, Macs, and Apple Watches, or others like the Vision Pro headset and its smart TV.

It is anticipated that Apple will merge tvOS and homeOS into a unified system that will run across all its smart home devices.
